The History of Tipp City, Ohio

Understanding our community’s past helps guide its future.

Tipp City was founded in 1840 by John Clark. Many of the first homes built by Mr. Clark remain in use today, reflecting the lasting character and pride that define the area.

Originally named “Tippecanoe,” the city’s name was inspired by William Henry Harrison’s presidential campaign slogan, “Tippecanoe and Tyler too!” The name was officially shortened to Tipp City in 1938.

At the edge of Tipp City sits Canal Lock No. 15 of the historic Miami-Erie Canal, a reminder of the transportation routes and infrastructure that once fueled commerce in the region.

Today, Tipp City maintains a strong connection to its historic roots while embracing modern growth. Its vibrant downtown district, local parks, expanding residential areas, and diverse business community reflect a city that honors its heritage while moving confidently forward.
